    That's just silly!

One year ago, I was perched in a hospital bed with an ice pack on my tummy, surgical hose squeezing my legs (leaving a blood blister on my tuckus), morphine drip trigger in one hand, and TV remote in the other. My room looked like the walk-in cooler at a florist shop and there was a steady stream of visitors from church, each telling me how good I looked; personally, I thought I looked dreadful- pale, no makeup, hair gone wild- but I just smiled and said thank you.

In honor of the one-year anniversary of my hysterectomy, I humbly present:

    Ode to a Uterus

In my teens, you bore promises

In my twenties, you bore fruit

In my thirties, you bore trials

In my forties, you bore grudges

Not one to slip gently into the quiet night

    You fought age and obsolescence

Like any dame worth her salt would

Demanding the spotlight though your day had past

Flows became floods, cramps became crippling

Until we could no longer co-exist

    And parted company

I like to think that you are where

You have your f-tubes propped on a stool

    Tossing back estrogen poppers

    And bragging about the time

You produced a 10 pounder with no help

Rest in Peace- you done good

The scones are done- all twenty-one dozen (that’s 252, in case you were wondering); the scent of oranges still lingers in the house, drawing all who enter to the kitchen, in search of samples. For those who asked (and those who didn’t but want it anyway) here is the recipe:

    1-3/4 cups flour

    2 tbsp sugar

    3 tsp baking powder

    1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup currants (or chopped dates if you prefer)

Pre-heat oven to 425°; line baking sheet with parchment paper; Mix above ingredients together in one bowl; in separate bowl whisk together:

    2 large eggs

    1/3 cup heavy cream

    1/4 tsp orange rind

    2 tbsp orange juice

Reserve 1 tbsp of mixture for egg wash; Mix remainder into dry ingredients until just moistened; turn out onto a floured surface and knead 5 or 6 times- add additional flour if too sticky; pat out into a 1/2 inch high round; cut with 2 inch round biscuit cutter and place on cookie sheet; brush tops with reserved egg mixture; bake for approximately 15 minutes, until lightly browned; Cool slightly before serving; Makes 1 dozen

The trick to scones is to handle them as little as possible, to keep them tender. They can be tightly wrapped in plastic, then foil, and frozen for up to a month- just re-heat them in the microwave, 10 seconds at a time, until just warm and softish.

Okay, since I’m too ornery for my own good, I can’t just tell you what my new project is (see #4 in A rousing chorus of cheers)- you are going to need to guess what it is. I will give you some clues and if after a reasonable period of time (to be established by the panel judge, me) no one guesses…I’ll keep giving hints.

The first clue is: a pair of ladies gloves.

    Have fun!

Did you make them for a church group that you joined?  That's alot of scones -- the church group must be having a fundraiser?  For some reason whenever I think of ladies gloves, I remember when I was little how my mom always wore gloves to church.
I am so glad everyone is enjoying the magazine.  I do also - It's one of my favorite subscriptions.  Did you get your new one?  I received mine Friday.
Eric will be arriving with Nikki Friday -- I am getting ready and so excited.  Giving Nik and Daniel a hand is no problems to me.  If I can help without neglecting my other responsibilities, then why not.  I remember being so young and with little ones.  Not always easy.
    Have a great week Meg!

Hi Meg - almost 9 years for me!!!! YAY!!!  Nothing better than going to the store, passing the "feminine" aisle and giving it the bird!! hahaha - for a minute i thought the scone recipe was part of the uterus lesson (i am a teacher) and the scone was shaped like the uterus.  haha LMAO - sorry - now i have ruined a great recipe. :)  my bad.  I remember after surgery they came into my room several hours later FORCING me to stand up - those sadomasochists!  whew!

I love your choice of books and likes.....i am torn between Eeyore, Tigger and Pooh, mostly depending on my mood.  And I am certaing that JK Rowling is responsible for the biggest surge in childhood literacy EVER.  That woman is a genius and clever and amazing.  My daughter and I have read them twice each and we listen to them on tape during long drives - perfect since they are like a gazillion hours long each.  And hilarious - we laugh and laugh.  Love your entries Meg - ttfn ~ tressie

Thanks.  It has been sent on to my sister.

A charity event and ladies' gloves.  Might it have something to do with a homeless shelter, a safe house for battered women or something of that type?  gail

Happy one year hysterectomy anniversary!!!  (Wish I could bid adieu (sp?) to mine!) I loved the poem - you really need to publish your stuff.  :-)

I thought I had a guess for your new activity but now I think I'm totally off track... but.... I thought of hand bell choir when you said it involved ladies white gloves.  Oh well, I will patiently await new clues.  (Ok, maybe not so patiently, please give us another!)

Hmmmm.... so many scones..... I would be eating them day and evening and end up with only 232 scones.

Thanks for praying for Rebecca and her family.  She passed away yesterday after her HS graduation.  She is finally free from the cancer that did not take her spirit, joy or dignity after all those years.  She left making an impact for the Kindgom and I know the Lord will have said - Well done Rebecca!

    Have a great day!

You're hosting an afternoon Tea.  The women will war gloves, drink tea and eat scones!  If you are selling them for a fundraiser - mark me down for one dozen!

Like everyone else... love the ode! I'll be up to my 3 year anniversary this summer... I just feel better and better all the time. In fact, I forgot what feeling "good" felt like!!
Just think how much you'll get done in another year or two!! There'll be no stopping you!

The scones... good grief. I honestly have no idea. But like you, I'll make a random uneducated stab in the dark.
You are making a million scones to sell in order to raise funds for all the gloveless women of the world...

    ok, beats me. Another clue?

I love the Ode Meg. I had lots of trouble with her from day one, with flooding all last year and then some, but she has quieted down the past few months I don't even know she is there so I guess she can stay.
Need more clues can't guess anything other than a big tea party!

That uterine ode was marvelous! I have a couple of uterus-less friends I'd like to present that to, if you don't mind. I'll give you full credit -- and I think you should contact...well, maybe not Hallmark, but Shoebox Greetings? Or the "Maxine" card-makers?

I was totally thinking of an Easter tea, too; but I see that Tammy beat me to it. Either that, or you're planning to stuff the scones into the fingers of the gloves, and give them to unsuspecting women. "Scone-Stuffed Gloves by Meg."

    Another marketing ploy? ; )

LOVE the ode. I was relieved of my 'plumbing' almost 20 years ago. Figuring out the HRT was tricky, but I if I knew now what I didn't know then....I would have done it alot sooner!
The scones sound yummy. Woud you believe I don't think I've ever had a scone! I've had my fair share of muffins, though.
I was going to guess wedding, but I like the Easter society one, too.
